Anatomical Study of the Infraorbital Foramen in Korean Infants

Abstract
The author carried out measurements on vertical and transverse diameters of the infraorbital foramen, and distances from the infraorbital foramen to the maxillary alveolar margin, the infraorbital margin, the prosthion and to the anterior nasal spine concerning the infraorbital foramen using 143 cadavers of Korean infants, and analyzed the growing state of the infraorbital foramen. In addition the author observed the shape and position of the infraorbital foramen using the same materials.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The growth pattern of all parts of the infraorbital foramen showed ascending concave curve except the transverse diameter of the infraorbital foramen with ascending convex curve in male.
2. The ratio of growth quantity in each part ranged generally from 1. 13 to 1.41.
3. The growth rate and specific growth rate were generally increased by linear relationship with the age in months except the transverse diameter of the infraorbital foramen with decreasing relationship in male.
4. The shape of the infraorbital foramen was elliptical in 60.5%, round in 17. 1%, semicircular in 15.4 and oval in 7.0%.
5. The infraorbital foramen was located on the upper 1/4-1/3 between the infraorbital margin and maxillary alveolar margin in 69.6%.
